Refrigerant leaks are among the most common issues we encounter with heat pumps in the Port Washington area. A leak reduces the system’s ability to transfer heat effectively, leading to poorer performance and higher energy use as the unit works harder to compensate. Left unaddressed, low refrigerant can also damage the compressor, one of the most expensive components to replace. Frozen coils are another frequent problem, especially during Wisconsin’s colder months. Ice buildup can form when airflow is restricted or refrigerant levels are off, preventing the system from heating or cooling efficiently. This issue often worsens in humid conditions near Lake Michigan, where excess moisture in the air accelerates ice formation on outdoor units. Electrical and control board issues also occur regularly, particularly in older systems or those that have undergone several Wisconsin freeze-thaw cycles. These issues can cause the unit to cycle improperly, fail to switch between heating and cooling modes, or stop running altogether. Our technicians are trained to identify these problems quickly, whether they stem from worn components, faulty wiring, or normal wear from years of Wisconsin weather. Dirty filters and blocked outdoor units round out the list of common culprits. A heat pump operating against restricted airflow has to run longer and harder to reach the temperature you set, which increases energy costs and shortens the equipment’s lifespan over time.
